McCreery School

In 1893 McCreery School Division #797 was formed and in 1894 a school  was built on the north east corner of SE28-08-09 W1, land owned by William McCreery.
The original Board members were Thomas Bowman, David Beatty, Solomon Pritchard and William McCreery.

The first teacher was Kenneth Fessenden followed by Miss Mitchell, J.W. Wilton, Andrew Moore, E.J. Staples, B. Myles, B. Parker, L. Willett, M.C. Murphy, Nellie Palmer, M.E. Kitching, C. Astbury, Kay Snaith, G. Anderson, Olive Elliot and others whose names are unknown at this time.

Some family names of students who attended McCreery School over the years are: Abbott, Angers, Bowman, Cain, Carr, Carroll, Dilworth, Eaton, Falconer, Fullerton, Graham, Hamilton, Harland, Johnson, Kitching, Lee, Lounsbury, Marks, McCreery, McCormick, McEachran, McRae, Mitchell, Moore, Morrison, Palmer, Pritchard, Robertson, Ross, Smith, Thompson, Waddell and Wilson.

Aside from being a place of learning, McCreery School also served as the social centre of the district hosting dances, concerts, whist drives, pie and box socials.
When the school closed in 1943, students were bused to nearby Arbroath School and later to Rathwell and Treherne after consolidation in 1956.
The school building was sold to Clifford Smith and moved to his nearby farm and used as a granary.

McCreery School Heritage Committee was formed in 2024 consisting of Val Turner (Bowman), Bill McCreery and Ian Pritchard with the goal of erecting a cairn to mark the original site. A large stone was moved and placed on a concrete base and an engraved granite plaque attached later that year. Financial support for this project was received from Tiger Hills Community Foundation and Treherne Kinsmen Club. We also acknowledge the generous donation of former student Betty Kitching (McCormick)  to the Tiger Hills Foundation.
